Hey Reader, As I sealed and signed my election ballot, a tiny detail stopped me in my tracks. It wasn't the candidates or the measures—it was the sticker waiting inside. More in this week’s lab notes from the studio. Dear Creativity, When I peeled open my ballot envelope, I expected the usual patriotic flag sticker. Instead, I was greeted by a white egret standing among reeds, catching a fish in the wetlands of Santa Clara County. I see these birds all the time near the sloughs and bays I call home. Wearing this didn’t just mean I did my civic duty—it felt like casting a vote for the place where I live and the ecosystem that surrounds me. And then I started wondering about the person who proposed it. Who was the one in that government office who dared to raise a hand and say, "What if we made the sticker different? What if it reflected our actual home instead of the generic template?" For most of my life, I’ve felt like the outsider, the wild visionary with the out-of-the-norm ideas in rooms that preferred the predictable path. But seeing that bird was a reminder: it’s the people who refuse to settle for the status quo who make the unexpected connections our communities need most. When we dare to think differently, create differently, and exist outside the standard mold, we give everyone around us permission to imagine braver possibilities and connect more deeeply with you, Creativity. I wonder what quiet, everyday templates are we following right now that are just waiting for one of us to propose something with real soul? Hey Reader, I just wrapped up teaching a two-week class. It was my third time running it, and while almost the entire curriculum evolved, one cherished activity stayed the same. More in this week’s lab notes from the studio. Data mapping activity from my Data Story Design for Influence course Dear Creativity, Every time I run this class, you show up through my students' hands the moment I take away the easy answers. The assignment is simple in structure, but demanding in practice: each team...
Hey Reader, There's a singing bowl that sits on my desk. I look at it every day, but only play it when the spirit moves me. The other day, something different happened. More in this week's lab notes. A view from my desk. Look right toward the singing bowl. Dear Creativity, I remember the day I bought this singing bowl. The seller explained that to make the tone last, you have to be completely relaxed. For a long time, I struggled. My notes were always short-lived. Then, the other day, it...
Hey Reader, I went to see Phantom of the Opera for what must be the fifth time, expecting a nice afternoon but no real surprises. I should have known better. This week's lab notes are about what happened next. One more to add to the collection of playbills (Broadway San Jose -Phantom of the Opera) Dear Creativity, On my way into the theater, I was carrying all the usual static of the world—annoyance at the woman who tapped my bumper in the parking garage, the frantic rush to get to our seats....
