🎙️ Is your 'dormant' skill the key?

Hey Reader,

This week, a creative practice I learned 20 years ago and left behind came roaring back to life. It arrived at the exact moment I needed it most. More in this week's lab notes.

Dear Creativity,

About 20 years ago, I fell in love with digital storytelling. I learned the craft—the voiceover, the photos, the magic of the Ken Burns effect—and brought it into my classroom, where it built a powerful sense of community. But when I left that school, that beautiful art form went dormant.

Over the years, I could feel you nudging me back toward it, but it never quite clicked.

Until this week.

As I was working on a new offer, struggling to connect with its soul, Creativity, you whispered: create a digital story. And just like that, the dormant skill woke up. It was the key. I created the story, and I can't wait to bring this classic medium back to others.

It’s a beautiful reminder that no creative skill is ever truly wasted. It’s just waiting for the right season to be called upon again.

What dormant skill from your past is waiting to be the key to your present?

Innovatively yours,
Dr. Abigail đź’›

Hey Reader, I recently started a 28-day sketchbook challenge, and immediately hit a wall that had nothing to do with drawing. It was a powerful reminder of how we can get in our own way. More in this week's lab notes. A tiny sketch of my snake plant that is giving life, no matter how much I ignore it. Dear Creativity, I started a tiny sketchbook challenge this month—just 10 minutes of drawing a day. But before I even began, the multipassionate perfectionism set in. Which notebook should I...

Hey Reader, Three years ago, I had a swirl of ideas so big, it’s still unspooling. This photo captures a moment from back then, and it holds a powerful lesson I'm carrying into my work today. More in this week's lab notes. Untangling my jar of ribbons into a rainbow. Dear Creativity, When I first started what is now The Innovation Doctor, I had a chaotic, beautiful swirl of ideas. I was building a community, designing challenges, and trying to find the right path forward. It felt a lot like...

Hey Reader, Lately, on my morning walks, I've found myself drawn back into an old practice: macro photography. It's coinciding with a book I'm reading and a challenge I'm doing, and all signs are pointing to one powerful idea. More in this week's lab notes. Morning walk. Two flower perspectives. Dear Creativity, On my morning walks, I've found myself getting closer to the world again, which means my photo gallery on my cell phone is filling up with macro shots. It happens to be at the same...
