Hey Reader, I was stuck in a conference hotel for a week in New Orleans. On my last day, I popped into a museum next door for a quick tourist experience. What I found was a masterclass in creativity and the entire philosophy of my brand, hiding in plain sight. More in this week's letter. Dear Creativity, After days under the fluorescent lights of a conference hotel, I found you in the most unexpected place: a spirits museum. The Sazerac House in New Orleans wasn't just stories and artifacts; it was a feast for the senses. The intense smell of whiskey distillation, virtual bartenders, and even an apothecary where I learned bitters are the "bartender's seasoning." And then, in the middle of it all, I saw it: The Lab. Right there, behind glass, was the science that powered the entire experience. It was a beautiful, tangible reminder that every great idea, even one as joyful as a cocktail, has a genius structure underneath. No one thinks of cocktails as science, but this lab proved otherwise. I imagined the scientists, having the time of their lives, running experiments with you, Creativity, to find the perfect proportions. It was the Lab and the Studio, together in perfect harmony. There was so much to be curious about and imagine on the three floors of the museum. What rigorous experiments are powering our most playful ideas? Dear Creativity, Last week, I planned a "Pop-Up Play Lab" for my community, a delightful hour of coloring and conversation. I was so excited. And then, no one was able to make it. For a moment, I was...
Hey Reader, I'm planning a coloring session in my community, and it has me thinking about the tools we use and the creative seasons we're in—more on that in this week's letter. My old Staedtler Marker/Pen Set Dear Creativity, Seven years ago, I was obsessed with these Staedtler markers/pens. They were everything to me—my favorite tool for journaling and making marks. Eventually, a new season arrived, and I gave them away. Over the years, other pens and markers have come and gone. Some stay,...
Hey Reader, After a long day of travel yesterday, I was met with an unexpected gift. It's the theme of this week's letter to Creativity. New Orleans, Louisiana Dear Creativity, There are days when my mind is tired, and all I want to do is lie in bed and rest. Yesterday was one of those days. After long hours of travel, I arrived in a strange new place with a long evening of tasks still ahead of me. And yet, you showed up. You showed up with the biggest evening smile, a sunset that filled the...
